About University of Northern Colorado
The University of Northern Colorado, commonly known as Northern Colorado or simply UNC, is a coeducational public institution of higher education and research located in Greeley, which is a Home Rule Municipality, the county seat and the most populated city of Weld County, situated in the US state of Colorado. Having a population estimated at a number of nearly 99 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census, Greeley is also the 12th most populated city in the state, as well as a major city of the large Front Range Urban Corridor.
UNC traces its roots back in the late 1880, when the citizens of Greeley petitioned the Colorado Government, expressing their desire to create a school for the education of the teachers in their community. Colorado State Normal School was established in April, 1889, thanks to Governor Cooper who signed a Senate Bill which made the school’s founding possible. After experiencing many changes, during its history, in architecture, focus and student ideals, as well as having its name changed several times, over the years, in 1970, the institution was finally named University of Northern Colorado, which remains the same today.
Since it was founded, UNC grew, offering its students today more than 100 undergraduate programs in the fields of sciences, arts, business, education, humanities and human science, as well as 50 graduate programs, mainly in the field of education, distributed through 6 colleges. UNC is the third largest university in Colorado, by enrollment, having nearly 10 000 undergraduate and more than 2000 graduate students (2008), from 48 states, 42 countries, 3 territories and 6 continents.
The athletic teams from UNC are known as the Bears, who compete in the NCAA Division I and FCS in football (formerly I-AA), the university being also a member of the Big Sky Conference. The Bears have won 2 Division II Football National Championships, in ’96 and ’97, and they won their first Big Sky Championship in 2009, when the Women's Volleyball team defeated Portland State, capturing the Big Sky Volleyball Championship.
